My student is a freshman. What art classes can they take?
Students entering 9th grade have the option of taking Art 1 (drawing & painting) or 3-D Design 1 (ceramics & sculpture).
What course is required to advance to an intermediate course?
After students have taken Art 1, they can take Art 2. If they have taken 3-D Design 1, they can take 3-D Design 2. The only way to "skip" the introductory course is to contact the teacher. After meeting with the teacher and reviewing a portfolio of artwork, will the student be considered.
After my student takes Art 1, can they take 3-D Design 2?
Unfortunately, no. Due to the specific curriculum for each program, students will need to take the introductory course before moving onto the higher level courses. However, if students has taken Art 1, they can take 3-D Design 2, and vice versa.
What is the best way of contacting you?
Either in person or e-mail(School Loop or school e-mail). I check my e-mail frequently throughout the day.
Do students have to bring materials to class?
Each class has a set list of required the materials. Check the course syllabus.
Do art classes have final exams?
Yes.
Is there homework?
Depends on what you finish during class time. I encourage students to use their class time effectively, so they don't need to bring their projects home. Ceramic projects are difficult to transport. However, students might need to work on their Sketchbook Entries at home.
What happens if I'm sick/on vacation/out on sports?
Art classes are primarily studio days, which means students work on projects. If you the student, are absent, you should e-mail the teacher to notify when you'll be gone. If you know you'll be absent in advance, you should talk to the teacher to find out what you'll miss. If you are gone for an extended period of time, and a project is due during that time, you will have a set number of days to complete it. If it's not completed by the revised date, the late policy will be in effect. Excessive absences will effect your semester grade.
When do we get to take our work home?
You will get your work returned periodically throughout the school year. Some artworks are saved for the district-wide art show at the end of the school year.
Does ceramics really make you sick?
For the amount of time you'll be working with clay, no. But repeated exposure to clay dust can affect you over time. This is why Ms. Jasiulek establishes strict clean-up procedures and expects students to cooperate. This is to protect not just the students, but also herself, who is around clay and clay dust for most of the school year. Plus, don't you enjoy working in a space that is clean any way?
Can I make my own stuff out of clay?
If you want to create your own artworks (in addition to the assigned projects), sure! However, you will need to purchase your own clay. We use Clay Planet's brand of clay, Orion Stout. This makes it easier for Ms. J to fire in the kiln.
