Art 1 provides a basic foundation and knowledge of a variety of drawing and painting skills. Students experiment with materials and techniques, create original works of art, learn how to organize the Elements of Design and manipulate the Principles of Design, as well as become acquainted with artists from the present and past. Throughout the course, students will be familiarized with vocabulary, various art mediums, and tools. Students also analyze and critique artworks, discuss aesthetic issues, and understand how art is related to history and culture. Students develop practical skills used by artists through the use of many materials, tools, and techniques. Projects require research, brainstorming, reflection, and developing a large vocabulary relating to all aspects of drawing and painting. All assignments include teacher-led demonstrations, time to experiment, and lots of studio time!
Art 1 is not just a class you take to become an "artist". Whatever your career path, art makes you more observant, aware, empathetic, and able to fully communicate your ideas. You will emerge as more creative, capable, and well-rounded people.
