In the 3-Design program, students receive instruction on handbuilding skills in ceramics and techniques in creating 3-D sculptural forms. Projects focus on meaningful hands-on learning experiences which develop, encourage, and allow for personal expression and problem solving.
Students develop practical skills used by artists through the use of materials, tools, and techniques. Projects require research, brainstorming, problem-solving, reflection, and developing a large vocabulary relating to all aspects of ceramics and sculpture. All assignments include teacher-led demonstrations, time to experiment, and lots of studio time!
3-D Design is not just a class you take to become an "artist". Whatever your career path, art makes you more observant, aware, empathetic, and able to fully communicate your ideas. You will emerge as more creative, capable, and well-rounded people.
3-D Design 1 provides students with a basic foundation and knowledge of handbuilding skills in ceramics, and techniques in creating three-dimensional forms. Throughout the course, students will develop artistic and critical thinking skills, an understanding of the Elements and Principles of Design, explore historic and contemporary artworks, and create original works of art. Students will be familiarized with art vocabulary, various sculptural mediums, tools, and techniques. This course provides students with the experience of working in three-dimensions, and responding to works of art through writing.
3-D Design 2 is an advanced class that continues the use of handbuilding skills in ceramics and techniques in creating sculptural forms. Students investigate various technical, aesthetic, and conceptual issues related to 3-D art. Through a series of projects, students develop personal expression and visual communication, and experiment with new materials. Students are expected to be competent in basic ceramic skills and decorating methods. Projects will require creative problem-solving and students will use sketchbooks to document ideas and plans. There is also a focus on developing communication skills through writing and talking about art.
3-D Design 3 is an advanced class where students are expected to be competent in ceramic and sculptural art skills. Students are also required to exhibit self-directed behaviors and work independently, while also maintaining a constructive dialogue with peers and the teacher. The major focus is developing a practice of studio research and visual communication in order to create a body of work that has breadth of skills. Projects challenge creative problem-solving, while also defining goals and deepen each student’s understanding of their work. Students will use sketchbooks to document ideas and plans. There is also a focus on developing communication skills through writing and talking about art.
What is the difference between 3-D Design 2 and 3?
Projects become more complex, requiring students to rely on skills and processes learned in 3-D Design 1.
Advanced skills are taught and assignments allow more independence and choice.
Students also learn how to analyze art and write artist statements to support their creations.
Focus on the class is more about establishing a studio practice that involves research, planning, creating, and reflecting.
